The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time randomizers are taking the speedrunning community by storm. I wanted to load one onto my Wii’s Virtual Console but was having issues getting the injected WAD to load.
Here’s the process I followed to inject an Ocarina of Time Randomizer ROM into a Wii Virtual Console WAD.
Aug 15, 2018 Did what I was told at startup and then I was able to get the common key relatively easy, so I go into the DS tab to see about injecting a rom. 'No bases downloaded' under the roms section and I am lost, I know I have bases but not these ones, and for some reason it gives a list of bases just for the DS - so once I have that figured out it's. Requirements: WiiScrubber v1.40; nfs2iso2nfs v0.5.4; it may require the Wii common Key. You can use wiiscrubber's key.bin renamed to wiicommonkey.bin.

What You Need
The instructions below assume that you already have the following:
- A soft-modded Wii console, with:
- An SD card with an SD card reader.
- The Homebrew Channel.
- A WAD installer of your choice.
- The Ocarina of Time Randomizer of your choice, either the original from AmazingAmpharos, or TestRunner’s build.
- An Ocarina of Time WAD in USA/NTSC format.
- An Ocarina of Time ROM, version 1.0 in USA/NTSC format.
- A GUI of krimtonz’ gzinject, called gzinjectGUI.
The Process
Generating your Ocarina of Time randomizer ROM
This example uses the Windows installer method from AmazingAmpharos.
- Install the randomizer executable, then open OoT Randomizer.
- Change the options as you desire, making sure to select the “Compress patched Rom” option.
- Under “Base Rom,” select your version 1.0 Ocarina of Time ROM.
- Click “Generate Patched Rom.”

- Extract gzinjectGUI and open gzinjectGUI.exe. If Windows shows a protection message, click “More info” and then “Run anyway.”
- Under “Compressed ROM (32MB),” drag and drop or navigate to the compressed Ocarina of Time randomized ROM that was generated above. By default, this file is in the directory
%USERPROFILE%DocumentsOoTRandomizer
. The compressed ROM’s filename will end with-comp
. - Under “Donor WAD (Vanilla OOT),” drag and drop or navigate to your Ocarina of Time WAD file.
- Optionally give the file a Channel ID and Channel Title, then click “Generate WAD.”
Installing the WAD to the Wii
- Take the SD card out of your Wii.
- Using the SD card adapter, open up File Explorer and navigate to the SD card.
- Create a folder and name it
wads
. Open thewads
directory you’ve just created. - Inside the
wads
directory, drag and drop the WAD we generated in the last step. By default, the WAD is generated in the same directory as the gzinjectGUI application. - Once the transfer is complete, safely eject the SD card and re-insert it into the Wii console.
- Power on your Wii and go to the Homebrew Channel. Open the WAD manager of your choice and install the WAD following the WAD Manager’s instructions.
- Exit the WAD Manager and navigate back to the Wii’s Home Menu.
- You’re done!

■ OS | ◊ CPU | ● RAM | ○ VRAM | ♦ GPU | □ Graphic API |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
■ Windows 7 (x64) or above, Windows 10 recommended. | ◊ Recommend at least 4 core 4 thread CPUs, but 2/Dual Core CPUs will work for lighter titles. Cemu makes use of up to 5 cores. | ● Minimum of 4GB for light titles, 8GB for most titles, at least 16GB or more for compatibility with every title. | ○ OpenGL - Preferably at least 2 to 6GB. | ♦ NVIDIA GPU: Runs as expected on most recent driver. | □ OpenGL 4.1 (4.6 is used if available) |
■ Cemu cannot run on 32bit systems. | ◊ The higher your CPU benchmarks for Single Thread speeds/performance, the better it will perform on Cemu. | ● For AMD Ryzen CPUs, having great RAM quality will boost your CPU's performance. | ○ Vulkan - Preferably at least 4 to 6GB. Has instability issues with 2GB or less. | ♦ AMD GPU: Runs as expected on most recent driver | □ Vulkan 1.0 (1.2 will be used when possible) |
■ Cemu can run on Linux with Wine. A native Linux build is planned in the distant future. | ◊ The higher you can overclock your CPU and manage its temperature, the better it will perform on Cemu. | ● The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is considered a heavy title, 16GB recommended. | ○ If you do not have a viable amount of VRAM you will be much more likely to encounter crashes or much worse performance overall. | ♦ Intel GPU: Not officially supported. Heavy visual glitches, runs best on Vulkan. | □ There are no current plans for other Graphic APIs |

Setting Games, Updates, and DLC to work with CEMU | ||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
StartingUpdating Games and Installing DLCsTo use your Update or DLC for a game, you must install it via Cemu's UI. Once you open Cemu, go to `File -> Install Update or DLC` and then navigate to the Update/DLC folder. Open the Meta folder and select the Meta.xml file. Using Dumped GamesIf you store all of your games in their own folders, you can keep all of the folders / games in a centralized Game Folder. Point Cemu to this folder, and as long as the games are WUD/WUX with keys in keys.txt or RPX with their meta.xml in their Meta folder, they will show up in Cemu's UI. If you do not have a meta folder / file for your RPX game, we highly suggest you use FTPiiU Everywhere to get the data so you can have the game show up; otherwise you may use a method below:
